A little note on twitter...

I have it. I'm @RebeccaJ98. Until today all I'd really used it for was to text my status update so that my twitter would update my facebook. Today I decided to do a little browsing through the peeps I'm following. I found this little goodie. LOVE the Schizophrenic and Punch Quotes designs. So good.

If you twitter, how do you do it? Via the web, iPhone (which I don't have), program you run on your computer or ??? Also any tips or suggestions for utilizing twitter would be much appreciated. :)

tuesday tunes: request edition!

A friend of mine emailed me the other day and recommended I share the following song. I love the simple comforts of it. I hope you enjoy.

The Words I Would Say by Sidewalk Prophets

Three in the morning
And I'm still awake
So I picked up a pen and a page
And I started writing
Just what I'd say
If we were face to face
I'd tell you just what you mean to me
I'd tell you these simple truths

Be strong in the Lord and
Never give up hope
You're going to do great things
I already know
God's got His hand on you so
Don't live life in fear
Forgive and forget
But don't forget why you're here
Take your time and pray
These are the words I would say

Last time we spoke
You said you were hurting
And I felt your pain in my heart
I want to tell you
That I keep on praying
Love will find you where you are
I know cause I've already been there
So please hear these simple truths

Be strong in the Lord and
Never give up hope
You're going to do great things
I already know
God's got His hand on you so
Don't live life in fear
Forgive and forget
But don't forget why you're here
Take your time and pray
These are the words I would say

From one simple life to another
I will say
Come find peace in the Father

Be strong in the Lord and
Never give up hope
You're going to do great things
I already know
God's got His hand on you so
Don't live life in fear
Forgive and forget
But don't forget why you're here
Take your time and pray
Thank God for each day
His love will find a way
These are the words I would say

on visual chaos...

Those of you who are friends with me on facebook may have seen a status update a while back about a blog entry I had brewing in my mind. It all started with this episode of the FOLIO Podcast featuring David Beckstead. About 28 and a half minutes or so in, while talking about the different types of art that David studied throughout his life he says that "It all came to fruition with photography and now being able to isolate these ideas composition and be able verbalize them has helped me to grow as a photographer and understand composition. I throw out to these photographers I say, 'one of the key elements to me is how you harness visual chaos'... Visual chaos is everywhere." Indeed it is!

When I heard David say that he asks other photographers how they harness visual chaos it was like a light went off in my brain. I had a vision for this post that would feature many of my photographer friends answering David's question - how do YOU harness visual chaos? However, one such photographer friend answered the question so eloquently (and verbosely ;)) that I wanted to focus on her response.

As some of you know I've spent the summer assisting for one of my area's best and most interesting wedding photographers, Susan Berman of Whimsical Photo Design. Susan is one of the most incredible, brilliant, witty, fabulous people I've ever met. She also happens to be a phenomenal photographer. I am so blessed to call her a friend.

When I first sent Susan the question her reply was "That is a FANTASTIC question! I'll have to email you my answer in a bit." I'm sure there was more about her 3 year old girl needing attention. That Mabz. ;) Here is Susan's answer...

"Think about how much our eyes are bombarded by on a daily basis in terms of visual stimulation. There is a ton going on. But in photography, the goal is to capture your subject, through that visual chaos, and make them shine. Make them the true subject of your image. To make them the only thing the viewer sees and feels.

I accomplish these goals through a lot of little techniques.

First, and the easiest, is to pick something that is visually not chaotic as part of the background. Popular choices include the ocean, the mountains, trees or shrubs. These natural elements lend themselves to a serene and austere background. This allows the viewer of the image to solely focus attention upon the subject.

However, these perfect backgrounds aren't always the easiest to come by! I use other techniques to bring subject into focus on a visually busy background. Through the use of bokeh, or low depth of field, I'm able to essentially 'blur' the background into nothingness; which allows my subjects to shine on their own. Bokeh takes out the visual distractions of everyday life and leaves the subject standing alone. This is a popular technique amongst many a photographer and a useful one at that. But, I prefer something a little different...

I love to use lighting to my advantage to bring my subject into primary positioning within my image. By using creative lighting I can make my subject stand out from the background. Various ways I do this is through use of backlighting (sunlight or strobe use), front/side lighting, shadows and highlights. The strong lighting of a subject, again, allows the subject to stand apart from the background or the chaos surrounding.

Adding in elements of visual chaos in the environment can add so much to an image. It tells a story, gives depth to the character of the person and/or subject so it's not necessarily a bad thing to have in your image. In fact, some of the strongest images I've taken purposely add those stories in order to give the image more story. However, by separating your subject from this visual chaos allows the viewer to both understand the context in which the image has been taken and the story in which the photographer is trying to tell."

I want to share a few of my favorites images by Susan... First up is a gorgeous wedding shot that is a great example of the first setup Susan described using nature as a background.

Next is a shot of the same couple, but here Susan uses the environment in a creative way that adds depth and interest, telling the story of their day in another way.

I happened to be present at the creation of this image. Susan is a master. I also LOVE the processing that her graphic designer went for with it.
Not what I imagined, but stunning! This one is a definite fav!

One last image here that I think really showcases Susan's talent with lighting her images. I wasn't there for this wedding (and I was ticked after seeing this!) but she managed to hobble along without my assistance. ;) One of the things Susan does that I find interesting, unique and gorgeous is backlighting her subjects, particularly after dark!

If you'd like to get to know Susan a little more (and I HIGHLY recommend that you do!) you should check out her blog. There was also a terrific interview recently of Susan by a mutual friend, Jessica Wright of Memories That R Precious.

tuesday tunes

Even if you're not convinced that Jesus is the way, I think we can all agree with Casting Crowns assessment of what the world does and doesn't need. One of the things I love about listening to this song is that after the second verse there's a section where they have young people (teens maybe?) sharing things like, "The world doesn't need my tithe, my hoodie or my translation of the Bible". Imagine that. ;) Probably my favorite line comes in the second verse, "God's got to change her heart before he changes her shirt." I love that! So often we (as a society and as individuals) make unfair judgments on people based solely on their appearance. I know I'm a lot more than mine, so I try to watch that. If only I were perfect. ;) I love Casting Crowns and have been listening to their first three albums on shuffle on my iPod lately. It makes me really happy. :)

What This World Needs by Casting Crowns

What this world needs is not another one hit wonder with an axe to grind
Another two bit politician peddling lies
Another three ring circus society
What this world needs is not another sign waving super saint that's better than you
Another ear pleasing candy man afraid of the truth
Another prophet in an Armani suit

What this world needs is a Savior who will rescue
A Spirit who will lead
A Father who will love them in their time of need
A Savior who will rescue
A Spirit who will lead
A Father who will love
That's what this world needs

What this world needs is for us to care more about the inside than the outside
Have we become so blind that we can't see
God's gotta change her heart before He changes her shirt
What this world needs is for us to stop hiding behind our relevance
Blending in so well that people can't see the difference
And it's the difference that sets the world free

Jesus is our Savior, that's what this world needs
Father's arms around you, that's what this world needs
That's what this world needs

Today's song is one that I'm sure we can all relate to at some level...

The Hard Way by Eric Church

Only fools would race down Gristmill Road
Let alone in angry weather
That’s what I tell everyone I know
Now that I know better

That’s a lesson I wish I would have learned
Without having to watch my Mustang burn
Before my best buddy had to wind up hurt
And his whole life was changed
That’s a lesson I wish I didn’t learn
The hard way

Only a fool would keep a diamond ring
In a box on the top of his closet
He came so close, he almost asked
It was right there in his pocket

That’s a lesson I wish I would have learned
Before standing in the back row of that church
Watching her daddy givin’ her
To the man who took my place
That’s a lesson I wish I didn’t learn
The hard way

Regrets been known to give a man a beatin’
But I ain’t in the mood for fighting back this evening

Only fools don’t take the time of day
They stay too busy running
To stop just once and tell their dad
Just how much they love him

That’s a lesson I wish I would have learned
Before the phone call came and it was her
No, Mama never had to say a word
I knew it was too late
That’s a lesson I wish I didn’t learn
The hard way... The hard way
The hard way... The hard way

Now, I haven't learned any of those particular lessons, but trust me, I've learned my share. :)

I heard this song on the radio the other day and I just love it. The music, the lyrics, the message. And while it's primarily about a young girl/young woman, I think it's just as true for the guys. ;) I feel this way about my husband, my dad, my brothers as well as all of the wonderful women in my life. To all of you who have made and continue to make a difference in who I am - there could never be a more beautiful you.

More Beautiful You by Jonny Diaz

Little girl fourteen flipping through a magazine
Says she wants to look that way
But her hair isn’t straight her body isn’t fake
And she’s always felt overweight

Well little girl fourteen I wish that you could see
That beauty is within your heart
And you were made with such care your skin your body and your hair
Are perfect just the way they are

There could never be a more beautiful you
Defy the lies disguises and hoops they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you

Little girl twenty-one the things that you’ve already done
Anything to get ahead
And you say you’ve got a man but he’s got another plan
Only wants what you will do instead

Well little girl twenty-one you never thought that this would come
You starve yourself to play the part
But I can promise you there’s a man whose love is true
And he’ll treat you like the jewel you are

There could never be a more beautiful you
Defy the lies disguises and hoops they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you

So turn around you’re not too far
To back away be who you are
To change your path go another way
It’s not too late you can be saved
If you feel depressed with past regrets
The shameful nights hope to forget
Can disappear they can all be washed away
By the one who’s strong can right your wrongs
Can rid your fears dry all your tears
And change the way you look at this big world
He will take your dark distorted view
And with His light He will show you truth
And again you’ll see through the eyes of a little girl

There could never be a more beautiful you
Defy the lies disguises and hoops they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you
There could never be, a more beautiful you.

And a little treat - here's an acoustic version recorded at the radio station I heard it on!

A beautiful couple...

Earlier this month I had the privilege of second shooting/assisting Susan Berman, the INCREDIBLE photographer of Whimsical Photo Design at the wedding of Doug & Nadia. You can check out Susan's stunning work on her blog. I was able to grab a few shots that day that I like. I've been without my primary editing software for almost three months now, so getting through things is a challenge. I should be up and running again by the end of next week. :D Here's a couple for now!

Camping!!!

Last month Jake and I went camping for the first time since we've been married! I couldn't believe we hadn't gone sooner as we both LOVE to camp. We went to Ohanapecosh Campground at Mt. Rainier for 3 nights. If they had shower facilities I would have stayed a week! Unfortunately 3 nights without a shower is my limit. ;) On our last night some AWESOME friends joined us to hang out. Here are a few images I snapped, enjoy!

My wonderful husband...

Making a DELICIOUS potato, onion, jalapeno breakfast scramble. It was sooooooo good. :)

We got this tent from Jake's parents... They used it when their boys were kids. When we were folding it up, we discovered a date on the bottom of the tent. 12.1.75. Or something close to that. I know it was December and before 1977 when Jake was born. ;) The thing is, it's still in great condition! I bet we'll be using it for years. Plus it's my favorite color. :D

These are our rad friends, Chris & Brooke who came to keep us company. And of course, play with fire. We had a roaring campfire the night they were there. Aren't these two just adorable?!

They're a little nuts too. They fit right in!
I almost forgot the rest of my favorite pictures!! The night before C+B arrived I played around some with high ISOs and long shutterspeeds (for my photog peeps ;)) and got the following shot (processed two ways):

Here's one of us together (thanks Brooke for grabbing it!).

The same night I was shooting stars, I grabbed this of our picnic table. I love the way the light from the lantern came out.

And on our last morning there I looked out from our picnic table and saw the sunlight streaming through the trees and could not resist grabbing my camera. What a sight to wake up to. :)

Next year we're planning a minimum of 3 camping trips. One of them will be for my *gasp* 30th birthday. I can't wait!!!

To all of the creative folks out there...

You have GOT to check out FOLIO Podcast with Scott Anderson. From FOLIO's site - FOLIO is a podcast about living an artful life, featuring in depth conversations with creative professionals and interesting people. It's SO fascinating and engaging.

I listened to episode 6 first featuring Me Ra and Brian of Me Ra Koh Photography because I've been following Me Ra's blog for over a year (or two?) now and I just love it. When I found a two hour interview with her and Brian I was THRILLED! I could have listened to Me Ra & Brian talk to Scott all day. I love the lifestyle they've created for their family. It's just awesome. You'll have to listen to find out more. ;)

After listening to Me Ra's episode, I've been getting into the others as well. Promise Tangeman, David Nightingale of Chromasia and Shawn Reeder so far. I'm planning to listen to the others tomorrow or the next day. They're great for the train commute!

If you check one (or all of them!) out, I'd love to hear what you think!

Tuesday Tunes

I almost forgot again! Since I set up last week's song to post while we were enjoying the fabulous OR Coast, I tried to remind myself every day to be sure and get this week's song up. I almost spaced it until I was in the car on my way home and heard one of Brad Paisley's new songs. It's a look at the past compared with the present and is titled Welcome to the Future... Now, I can remember having video games at home, but we never had a TV in the car. ;) Enjoy! If anything in these lyrics strike you, leave me a comment! I'd love to hear about it!

Welcome to the Future by Brad Paisley

When I was ten years old,
I remember thinkin' how cool it would be,
When we were goin' on an eight hour drive,
If I could just watch T.V.

And I'd have given anything
To have my own PacMan game at home.
I used to have to get a ride down to the arcade;
Now I've got it on my phone.

He-e-ey...
Glory glory hallelujah.
Welcome to the future.

My grandpa was in World War II,
He fought against the Japanese.
He wrote a hundred letters to my grandma;
Mailed em from his base in the Philippines.

I wish they could see this now,
Where they say this change can go.
Cause I was on a video chat this morning
With a company in Tokyo.

He-e-ey...
Everyday is a revolution.
Welcome to the future.

He-e-ey...
Look around it's all so clear.
He-e-ey...
Wherever we would go and well we...
He-e-ey...
So many things I never thought I'd see...
Happening right in front of me.

I had a friend in school,
Running-back on a football team,
They burned a cross in his front yard
For asking out the home-coming queen.

I thought about him today,
Everybody who's seen what he's seen,
From a woman on a bus
To a man with a dream.

He-e-ey...
Wake up Martin Luther.
Welcome to the future.
He-e-ey...
Glory glory hallelujah.
Welcome to the future.
